MKC Concert Centre logo for international architecture competition

Lower Nemunas terrace is a potential social and cultural evolvement spot of Kaunas city. The new M. K. Čiurlionis concert center is projected in a strategic part of Kaunas city which is linked to historic part of the city, Žalgiris arena and Science center, plus it is directly linked to the northern Nemunas shore bank which will provide a significant impulse converting the remaining industrial buildings. Project territory is based along Minkovskiu street which separates territory from residential area. Project concept was based on not only development of public spaces for the city, but on ideological connection between historic city center and new developments along northern coast and Nemunas island. The new concert center could become a linking point witch in the future could evolve in a circular public system along Nemunas river utilising both sides of the river.

One of the main bases of the project was not only provide a effective and inspiring architectural and functional solution, but create a healthy integration of a huge volume into a delicate natural environment, providing innovative and dynamic public connections and spaces. Interior structure of the building was developed to provide inspiring spaces not only for visitors and working staff, but also insure maximum functionality and provide a possibility of housing simultaneously several cultural venues.

Concept development diagrams

Basic volume is split into three pieces, each witch their own function.

Performance volumes are aligned towards old town and towards new town and a volume of public space is like a bridge between them.

Ensuring connectivity by using building as a bridge between opposite sides of the site.

Establishing visual connection between inner public space and Nemunas river.

Three main volumes with their own functions is placed to get the most efficient performance. Designing final form by ensuring passage through the roof and establishing visual connection with permeability.

There are many variations of passages of Lorem Ipsum available, but the majority have suffered alteration in some form,

Volume composition was designed to ensure a smooth integration into the surrounding context. By separating concert halls each from another , the main composition became more sculptural  and poetic, demonstrating connection not only between two halls, but between two city parts. This provided an opportunity to create a strong visual connection from the inner public spaces of the building to Nemunas river and northern city shore. This design creates a strong iconic symbol, which could be easily recognizable from distance.

From the first step into the building person experiences full panorama of the northern shore, which leads him all along to the concert hall.

The central public space was designed fully accessible for public, providing a possibility to held huge range of events inside it.

Spaces around concert halls and conference rooms for public can be limited to enter during the events.

1ST FLOOR VARIATIONS OF CONFERENCE ROOM

Conference hall was designed to host up to 4 independent events at the same time. Transformable walls provide a wide range of area transformation, witch varies from one spacious hall for conferences, expositions and other events to 4 independent room for more than 100 visitors. The conference hall has a direct connection to central public space, which is separated by a transformable bar, witch provides beverages, snacks and hot dishes for conference hall visitors.
